Behind the Vines: Our Vineyard Manager Tui Henare

Tui Henare has been part of the Lake Road Wines family for nearly 14 years. His journey into viticulture began after working in a variety of horticultural roles, but it was the unique diversity of vineyard work that drew him in. He says that viticulture offers changing tasks across the seasons— so no two months feel the same. For Tui, this variety, along with being outdoors in peaceful surroundings, makes the work thoroughly enjoyable.

As Vineyard Manager, right now his focus is on pruning, one of the most important jobs of the year. Pruning keeps the vines healthy and balanced, helping to control yield, improve grape quality, and prevent disease. In New Zealand’s vigorous growing conditions, it’s especially vital for ensuring sunlight and airflow reach the fruit, leading to better ripening and flavour.

Beyond the vines, Tui plays an important role in keeping the team running smoothly — managing time, allocating tasks, and making sure everyone has the right safety gear. What he enjoys most, though, is the people: meeting seasonal workers, local growers, contractors, and reps, and learning from the different experiences they bring.

For Tui, the vineyard isn’t just about growing grapes— it is about people and connection, and being part of something new every season.
