Experience is earned, courage is discovered by the young of heart who lead.

This is what makes us who we are in the world.

Our History

A family’s passion for the land, a provenance nurtured through three generations, a curiosity to create and produce the very best wines from the hands of chosen skilled vintners. From the unique soils of New Zealand’s finest grape growing regions – this is the signature of Lake Road Wines.

Since the 1970’s Lake Road Wines sought to unshackle the constraints imposed by large wine producers and thus earned an enviable reputation for customizing the art form between a region’s best grape growing practice, the dedicated winemaker and the discerning wine lover. The result is our range of distinctive, award winning wines like our cornerstone, Marlborough’s famous Sauvignon Blanc, and Gisborne’s Chardonnay complemented by other wines such as our range of Pinots and full flavoured aromatics. We proudly export to Australia, China, Singapore, United States, and soon to the UK & Europe. There have been many challenges over the decades to test a pioneering spirit, from local weather, to global economic highs and lows. Each has strengthened our commitment and resolve to stay true to our vision.

Lake Road Wines’ uncompromising quality, contemporary and environmentally aware viticulture practices and outstanding value go hand in hand with our commitment to exceed all expectations in an exciting and constantly evolving and contemporary international wine market. Experience earned over time blended with a youthful enthusiasm allows us to innovate and adapt to change, enabling us to deliver exceptional New World wines.

Lake Road Wines is a medium sized family winemaking business that has been operating in New Zealand for more than 40 years.

When our grandfather moved to Gisborne from Devonport in Auckland it was the beginning of a life of working with the land for the Blampied family, something that continues to this day.

Throughout the 1950’s and 60’s the Blampieds were pioneering growers of maize, other cropping and sheep and beef farming.

The first foray into the wine industry came when the first vines were planted in 1975. Lake Road and the family began growing grapes for Corbans Wines, one of the largest wine producers in New Zealand at the time.

But, it wasn’t all easy going with the business having to survive the 1985 floods and...

Cyclone Bola in 1988 which caused severe damage to the region and included a number of fatalities.

A time of expansion in vineyard area particularly in the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varietals.

The family purchased the Sun Valley Vineyard from Judd relatives in 2003, a vineyard which they continue to own today.

First use of contract winemakers as a means to breaking the contractual stranglehold that the large wine companies had over growers.
